But in this verse, we get their names.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They were \u201cMary Magdalene, Mary, the mother of James the younger and of Joseph, and Salome.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice that Mary and Mary Magdalene were mentioned the same between those verses. But Salome was only described in the first verse, while in the second one she was already named. Unfortunately, they couldn&#8217;t have a share of those. The tax collector would reserve them for the rich people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, what would these fishermen get in return? Sadly, only processed fish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Could you stand this unfair treatment?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If this were your primary source of income, what could you possibly do to fight for your right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, let&#8217;s recall a happy experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One night, John went fishing with some of his friends, such as Peter, Thomas, and Nathanael (John 21:1-2). But they caught nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The following day, &#8220;Jesus stood on the shore&#8221; (verse 4, NIV). He asked them if they caught fish. They said no.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To help them, Jesus asked them to throw their net on the other side of the boat &#8220;and you will find some\u201d (verse 6, NIV).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And yes, they caught fish! Verse 6 (NIV) continues, saying that they \u201cwere unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What a miracle! Earlier, they caught nothing. Now, their nets were so heavy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And did you know how many fish were caught? 153 (verse 11).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>What about his experiences as one of Jesus&#8217; followers?<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>As a disciple<\/strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You probably know John as one of Jesus&#8217; disciples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But how?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Remember we&#8217;ve learned earlier that John was a fisherman? He &#8220;called them.&#8221; And immediately, &#8220;they left the boat and their father and followed him&#8221; (Matthew 4:21-22, NIV).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As Jesus\u2019 disciple, John belonged to the \u201cinner circle\u201d<sup><a href=\"#footnote_3_15814\" id=\"identifier_4_15814\" class=\"footnote-link footnote-identifier-link\" title=\"Stephen Haskell, The Story of the Seer of Patmos, 16.1\">3<\/a><\/sup>. With this, he saw most of His personal moments and significant ministries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For instance, he was there during His transfiguration (Luke 9:28) and prayer at Gethsemane (verses 39-46 of chapter 22). Also, he accompanied Him in His healing acts such as that of the demon-possessed man (Mark 5).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, he had an embarrassing experience with Jesus, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the Samaritan villagers didn\u2019t accommodate Jesus for lodging, anger triggered John and James. They said, \u201cLord, do You want us to tell fire to come down from heaven and consume them?\u201d (Luke 9:54, ESV).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Jesus gently rebuked them. He reminded them that He didn&#8217;t come to the world to condemn it. Instead, He came to save it (John 3:17).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you were John or James, wouldn&#8217;t you feel ashamed of what you did?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet, John still proved to be a very dependable friend to Jesus in the end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When Jesus was about to die on the cross, John was with His mother, Mary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe won his way into the heart of the family, as well as into the heart of Jesus.\u201d Hence, He asked him to take care of her<sup><a href=\"#footnote_4_15814\" id=\"identifier_5_15814\" class=\"footnote-link footnote-identifier-link\" title=\"Stephen Haskell, The Story of the Seer of Patmos, 17.1\">4<\/a><\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What a privilege! Such trust!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>As an apostle and evangelist<\/strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After Jesus&#8217; ascension, John began working with Peter. Together, they preached the gospel of Christ wherever they went.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For instance, they rendered a sermon at Jerusalem during the Pentecost (Acts 2:14-41). For this, John encouraged them to receive the Holy Spirit and get baptized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John \u201cremained in Jerusalem for a number of years\u201d<sup><a href=\"#footnote_5_15814\" id=\"identifier_6_15814\" class=\"footnote-link footnote-identifier-link\" title=\"Stephen Haskell, The Story of the Seer of Patmos, 22.1\">5<\/a><\/sup>. Through his evangelistic efforts, he helped establish the early Christian church around 58 AD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through the coming years, John remained active in preaching. He &#8220;preached with great zeal and success.&#8221; He had a &#8220;testimony of power, wisdom, conviction, and sincerity&#8221; his enemies couldn&#8217;t contradict<sup><a href=\"#footnote_6_15814\" id=\"identifier_7_15814\" class=\"footnote-link footnote-identifier-link\" title=\"Ellen White, The Sanctified Life, 70.1\">6<\/a><\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also, John presented his faith clearly and convincingly. It was with &#8220;simplicity and candor that his words had a powerful effect.&#8221; As such, his listeners \u201cwere astonished at his wisdom and eloquence.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You now have a glimpse of John&#8217;s apostolic life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The question now is, how did his preaching bring about his exile at Patmos? He was modeling what a responsible and faithful evangelist should be doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unfortunately, this &#8220;unwavering fidelity to the cause of Christ&#8221; caused the bitterest hatred from his enemies. Since John was the last survivor of Jesus&#8217; disciples, his enemies decided to silence his testimony<sup><a href=\"#footnote_8_15814\" id=\"identifier_9_15814\" class=\"footnote-link footnote-identifier-link\" title=\"Ellen White, The Sanctified Life, 70.3\">8<\/a><\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If they accomplished this plan, they thought that Christ&#8217;s doctrine would not spread anymore. Worse, &#8220;it might soon die out of the world&#8221; if they treated it severely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, how did they accomplish this plan?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em><strong>2) They sent him to the Roman emperor for a trial.<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes, unfortunately, John&#8217;s enemies did that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But John was innocent, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Well, they misstated his doctrines and charged him with false witnesses<sup><a href=\"#footnote_8_15814\" id=\"identifier_10_15814\" class=\"footnote-link footnote-identifier-link\" title=\"Ellen White, The Sanctified Life, 70.3\">8<\/a><\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They \u201caccused him as a seditious person, publicly teaching theories which would subvert the nation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through these accusations, John&#8217;s enemies hoped to bring about his death<sup><a href=\"#footnote_9_15814\" id=\"identifier_11_15814\" class=\"footnote-link footnote-identifier-link\" title=\"Ellen White, The Acts of the Apostles, 569.3\">9<\/a><\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, they sent him to Emperor Domitian in 81 AD<sup><a href=\"#footnote_10_15814\" id=\"identifier_12_15814\" class=\"footnote-link footnote-identifier-link\" title=\"Wilson, 2020\">10<\/a><\/sup>. Also, he challenged him to drink poison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Can you imagine that? Such torture!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What would you do if you were John?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But did you know what? God preserved John&#8217;s life as He saved <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heroesbibletrivia.org\/en\/bible-heroes\/story-of-daniel\/\">Daniel<\/a> and his friends from the fiery furnace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">True enough, John had no trace of burn on his skin. Neither he was poisoned by the drink.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With this, he claimed God\u2019s promise in Mark 16:18 (ESV). That is, if people \u201cdrink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>3) John&#8217;s testimony made his enemies and the Roman emperor even angrier.<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John\u2019s survival and deliverance didn\u2019t convince the emperor. It didn\u2019t change his bad impression of Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He even said, &#8220;Thus perish all who believe in that deceiver, Jesus Christ of Nazareth&#8221;<sup><a href=\"#footnote_11_15814\" id=\"identifier_14_15814\" class=\"footnote-link footnote-identifier-link\" title=\"Ellen White, The Acts of the Apostles, 570.1\">11<\/a><\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But John replied, \u201cMy Master patiently submitted to all that Satan\u2026could devise to humiliate and torture Him. He gave His life to save the world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He continued, \u201cI am honored in being permitted to suffer for His sake. I am a weak, sinful man. Christ was holy, harmless, [and] undefiled. He did no sin; neither was guile found in His mouth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Look at that humility! He couldn\u2019t find anything wrong with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet, \u201che determined that he would silence his voice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How sad, wasn\u2019t it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually, the emperor removed John from the caldron<sup><a href=\"#footnote_14_15814\" id=\"identifier_17_15814\" class=\"footnote-link footnote-identifier-link\" title=\"Ellen White, The Acts of the Apostles, 570.2\">14<\/a><\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What do you think he was going to do next?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em><strong>4) The Roman emperor finally declared John&#8217;s exile.<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, the emperor didn&#8217;t change his mind. What wrong has he done?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Well, the Bible says that he was condemned \u201cfor the testimony of Jesus Christ\u201d (Revelation 1:9, ESV).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With this, his enemies thought they would no longer feel his influence. Just &#8220;one hour of God&#8217;s blessing in the sunshine and rain&#8221; can do wonders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is, they can &#8220;change the face of nature&#8221; more than man&#8217;s &#8220;boasted knowledge and persevering efforts can accomplish.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But above all these, John was reminded of the most sanctified part of Creation\u2014the Sabbath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For instance, he could recall God speaking the law to the Israelites at Mount Horeb. He adored the power of the Divine Architect<sup><a href=\"#footnote_19_15814\" id=\"identifier_24_15814\" class=\"footnote-link footnote-identifier-link\" title=\"Ellen White, The Sanctified Life, 72.1, 76.2\">19<\/a><\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In fact, he couldn&#8217;t endure the &#8220;excellent glory of Christ&#8217;s presence&#8221;<sup><a href=\"#footnote_20_15814\" id=\"identifier_25_15814\" class=\"footnote-link footnote-identifier-link\" title=\"Ellen White, The Sanctified Life, 78.1\">20<\/a><\/sup>. He would fall to the earth &#8220;as one stricken dead.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Well, no wonder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Who &#8220;can be compared unto the Lord?&#8221; He is &#8220;greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints.&#8221; And He &#8220;had in reverence of all them that are about Him&#8221;<sup><a href=\"#footnote_21_15814\" id=\"identifier_26_15814\" class=\"footnote-link footnote-identifier-link\" title=\"Ellen White, The Sanctified Life, 76.2\">21<\/a><\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As such, \u201cthe heavens shall praise Thy wonders, O Lord.\u201d The millions of worlds above will \u201craise a song of [honor, praise, and glory] to their Creator.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With this, how could John stand before God\u2019s majesty?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Jesus laid His hand upon him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said, \u201cFear not, I am the first and the last, and the living One\u201d (Revelation 1:17-18, ESV). And it strengthened John to live in God\u2019s glorious presence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moving on, John saw \u201cthe wild, desolate rocks, the mysteries of the great deep, and the glories of the firmament.\u201d These \u201cbore the impress of God\u2019s power and declared His glory\u201d<sup><a href=\"#footnote_16_15814\" id=\"identifier_27_15814\" class=\"footnote-link footnote-identifier-link\" title=\"Ellen White, The Sanctified Life, 72.1\">16<\/a><\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With this, let a man \u201clook upon the glory of the heavens in the night season\u201d and \u201cmark the work of God\u2019s power in the hosts thereof.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From this, \u201che is taught a lesson of the greatness of the Creator in contrast with his own littleness.\u201d It would \u201chumble his proud spirit in the presence of the Infinite One.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That must have been John\u2019s realization, too, don\u2019t you think?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Remember, he was once a high-tempered man like his brother (Luke 9:54). He was permitted to look upon the throne of God&#8221;<sup><a href=\"#footnote_20_15814\" id=\"identifier_32_15814\" class=\"footnote-link footnote-identifier-link\" title=\"Ellen White, The Sanctified Life, 78.1\">20<\/a><\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here, John saw &#8220;the white-robed throng of redeemed ones. He heard the music of heavenly angels.&#8221; Also, he enjoyed the &#8220;songs of triumph&#8221; from those who had overcome sin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With all these, God wanted John to be a messenger<sup><a href=\"#footnote_23_15814\" id=\"identifier_33_15814\" class=\"footnote-link footnote-identifier-link\" title=\"Stephen Haskell, The Story of the Seer of Patmos, 17.3\">23<\/a><\/sup>. He would become the medium of communication between God and man, giving messages of warning and hope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What a privilege, wasn&#8217;t it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Come to think of it. John&#8217;s exile might have been his worst nightmare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But, as you can see, it led him to an intimate bond with God. He shows us our weaknesses and His strength, teaching us to &#8220;lean on Him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He prepares us to meet emergencies so that we can &#8220;accomplish the great purpose&#8221; He has for us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In John&#8217;s case, that purpose was to see what would lie ahead concerning the earth and heaven.
